Remarks by Minister Wen-chung Pan

Chairman Huang Huang hsiong of the Taipei School of Political Science and Economics Foundation and other distinguished guests, including several previous ministers joined together to assume such a heavy responsibility. I would also like to say hello to the CEO Chen Dehua, and the President of National Tsinghua University HeCheng Hung. Good afternoon.

The Taipei School of Political Science and Economics has created a new milestone in Taiwan’s higher education. This aspiration has lasted for 30 years and hopefully it would be formally put into practice in the near future. From Chairman Huang’s remarks, everyone can understand that this process is not just about an attitude of sticking  to ideals, but also about practicing a religious belief. While there are indeed

many difficulties in this process, many major breakthroughs have been made to make Taipei School of Political Science and Economics a part of National Tsinghua University.

We are facing many challenges in higher education in Taiwan over the years. Of course, the previous Ministers of Education had made great contributions in the past. The major goal is to allow our universities to have more space for development and face international competition. National Tsinghua University has been very creative in recruiting students and talents. They included the Starry Project, the Xuri Project and the Shisui Project.

The merger of National Tsinghua University and Hsinchu University of Education has added the College of Art and Education to a school that used to specialize in science and engineering. It is a new beginning for Tsinghua University. This time, thanks to Chairman Huang and all the other board members, Taipei School of Political Science and Economics has officially become another very important treasure in the development of National Tsing Hua University. I believe that it would be great for National Tsing Hua University to combine humanities with technology. Based on this foundation, Taiwan’s higher education in the future must be heading into a different stage.

In fact, Chairman LinChen hai of Baojia Group has always been very generous in donating funds to higher education. This time, he donated 3 billion TWD to support such a futuristic ideal, and was willing to give back to the society. On behalf of the Ministry of Education, I would also like to thank the business community for their investment in education.

Finally, at this moment, Taiwan’s higher education has entered another new phase. Thank you.
